Coaching and Training Philosophy

The Parent as Coach® coaching and training philosophy is based on the belief that we first need to understand what human beings are in order to teach and coach them. This includes often misunderstood teens! From this place of understanding, we learn to offer support, ideas, new perspectives, plans for moving forward, and a host of tools and formats to help people create fulfilling and meaningful lives. Above all, we offer love and compassion to all we serve and come in contact with.

Our Training and Coaching Programs gently encourage you to take new action, based on your own agenda for your life, not ours. Our programs are taught by seasoned professionals who walk the talk with love, compassion and authenticity. We use accelerated learning techniques so you are learning and growing while you are in session. You leave able to experience high impact ongoing application in daily life. Our coaching aligns with the International Coach Federation Core Competencies and Standards of Ethics and Practice. We are Certified Family Coaches, having participated in rigorous study of professional coaching, adolescent development, adult learning, and neuro-linguistic programming.

Our Coaching Programs are outcome focused for and on the teen, young adult, parent or entire family. That is, we begin with your ideas, topics, issues and stated outcomes that then are agreed upon by both the clients and the coach. The coach then designs a confidential and custom Coaching Program, based on their knowledge and insights, to help you reach what you are looking for in yourself or your family. A path is set and benchmarks are acknowledged. It is a powerful partnership that creates real, tangible, and measurable outcomes for all concerned. See our success stories for real life results where struggle was turned into peace, communication, success and lasting results.

The Parent as Coach® Approach

Our approach is a proven and practical model for improving and transforming the relationship we as adults have with the teens in our lives. It is based on the roots and synthesis of life coaching, adult learning theories, positive psychology, Choice Theory, adolescent development, education and mentoring.

  • As professional coaches, we work with parents and teens to help them examine their own core beliefs and respect their beliefs and also the emerging beliefs of our "emerging adults."
  • Instead of teaching how to manage and control teens, our model helps us as adults appreciate the unique perspective of teens and young adults and to express respect, understanding, and support for who they are right now. This produces uncommon effects of the young person actually feeling respected and heard, which in turn allows an accelerated path for the young person to grow, learn, and produce positive choices and outcomes.
  • We teach parents the Parent as Coach® Approach, which does not dictate how to grow up; instead, the parent learns how to guide young people to their own positive decisions, solutions, inherent gifts, and the path to a meaningful and purposeful life.

Who is the Parent as Coach® Approach For?

Parent as Coach® is for adults everywhere who find working with or parenting teens challenging at best, impossible at worst. It doesn't have to be this way. Relationships between adults and young people can be rewarding, fun, endearing, and energizing.

Why Was This Unique Model Created?
Out of necessity for one parent.

  • Founder Diana Sterling discovered that previous ways of parenting were woefully inadequate as her child matured into a teen.
  • This everyday parent, a former film producer and trained as a professional coach, found that what worked best in her personal relationship to her teenage son were the skills and processes she used professionally with her adult clients in business settings.
  • Coming from her deep interest in wanting to help her teen and other young people grow into happy and productive adults, Diana developed a unique professional coaching model using the Parent as Coach® Approach for herself and for those who serve teenagers, young adults and parents everywhere.
  • Diana went on to create a model for parents to assist their young adults. It was the increased demand from parents as well as professionals worldwide to learn what was working with Diana’s unique coaching approach, both personally and professionally. Her products and programs for professionals are based around The Parent as Coach® Approach as well as The Advanced Coaching Course, the flagship program for a comprehensive and rigorous training for professional coaches, therapists, educators, social workers, and anyone serving teens, young people, parents and families.
  • Our coaching models can be adapted to children, or parents of children as well, when you take the core techniques and create new applications for this population.

Young people require adults who can help them to find their own way in life.

  • Teens do not want or need adults who tell them exactly how, what, and where to do this, that, and the other thing.
  • Teens who feel heard and respected can more readily access their own sense of self and create lives of joy and meaning.
  • When teens feel understood they work harder, display more interest and curiosity, and are far more compassionate and easy to get along with.
  • When teens feel that they are seen as responsible, they become more responsible.
  • When teens feel appreciated, they are more willing to feel and show gratitude.
  • When adults open the lines of communication through the Parent as Coach® role, the result can be harmonious and loving relationships that both parents and teens treasure.

Why Should We Care?

  • Parent as Coach® is about the safety, development, and happiness of the teens we love and hold dear in our lives.
  • As parents, teachers and professional coaches and mentors, it is our responsibility to help our young people to build the confidence to handle the ups and downs of life, the courage to take on new adventures, and the capacity to develop compassion for all living beings.
  • As educators and heath care professionals, we care because we want our work to make a difference beyond reading, writing, and arithmetic. We are responsible for providing our teens with the best possible tools to make conscientious life choices.
  • As citizens, we care because we live in this world together. It is our responsibility to coach teens and impart coaching skills to their parents, to assist the young person to become proactive and accountable citizens.
  • We teach and coach in an interactive process -working with the teen, the parent or any combination of family members. Call us for a FREE one hour consultation! Call Bill Sterling at 505-247-2902 ext 203 or email him at bill@billsterling.com. NOW! - your teens are waiting for you to call and are hungry for a change as much as you are.
